Why I Deleted My Most Successful Video

Deleting something that brings in views, subscribers, and engagement seems like a risky move. The Challenge of Focusing on One Audience

In the early days of my YouTube journey, I experimented a lot. I created diverse content, sometimes just for fun or because I knew the topic well. While that approach gave me freedom, it wasn’t aligned with a clear target audience. This lack of focus eventually became a problem.

One of my most successful videos was about why I hire people in the Philippines. It garnered millions of views and tens of thousands of subscribers. On the surface, this seemed like a massive win. But here’s the catch: the audience it attracted wasn’t my core audience.

My channel is geared toward business owners—coaches, speakers, and consultants—seeking strategies to grow their businesses. While my video resonated with people in the Philippines excited to hear me talk about their country, it didn’t connect with my ideal viewers. As a result, when I posted content aligned with my main topics, it didn’t perform well with this new audience.

I had to face a tough question: Should I pivot my channel to focus on Filipino-related content, or should I delete the video and recommit to my original audience?

Letting Go of Vanity Metrics

Deleting a highly successful video isn’t easy. Vanity metrics—subscribers, views, and likes—can be tempting to hold on to. They make you feel like you’re winning, even if they don’t support your broader goals.

For me, keeping that video meant compromising my channel’s purpose. I decided to delete not only that video but all my Filipino-related content to focus exclusively on my target audience.

The decision wasn’t without consequences. My daily views, incoming subscribers, likes, comments, and even ad revenue took a significant hit. However, I knew that this sacrifice was necessary to rebuild momentum with the right viewers—those genuinely interested in the value I aim to provide.

Does Deleting a Viral Video Hurt Credibility?

A common concern is whether deleting a viral video impacts your channel’s credibility. From my experience, it depends on the nature of your content. By staying focused on the right audience and content, I’ve been able to rebuild and even surpass the momentum I lost after deleting those videos.
