How To Upload Video on YouTube To Get More Views

Are there things you can do when uploading a video to YouTube to get more views? Absolutely. YouTube gives you control over many settings that can either help or hurt your video’s performance. As the creator of over 60 YouTube channels, I’ve broken it down into 13 specific actions you should take every time you upload.

Step 1: Optimize Video Length

YouTube rewards watch time. That means:

  • The longer your video (while holding attention), the better.
  • A 20-minute video where viewers watch 90% is more powerful than a 5-minute video with 30 seconds watched.

Skip Shorts for now if you’re just starting a new channel—focus on standard videos.

Step 2: Use Smart File Names

Rename your video file to match your title

For example: What is the best furniture for an Airbnb rental?

Do the same for your thumbnail file

Rename it to match the title of your video before uploading.

✍️ Step 3: Title, Description & Tags

Your Title

Choose a searchable, compelling title. Include keywords naturally.

Your Description

  • Start with a short summary that appears before “Show More.”
  • Include a call to action and relevant links.

Your Tags

  • Use relevant keywords only.
  • Stay under 200 characters.

⚙️ Step 4: Upload Settings

  • Choose the right playlist.
  • Set audience: “No, not made for kids.”
  • Disclose sponsorships.
  • Allow automatic chapters (optional).
  • Turn off “Notify Subscribers” for search-targeted videos.

Step 5: Video Elements

Subtitles

Edit the auto-generated subtitles to make them accurate and readable.

⏹ End Screens

Use the final 20 seconds to promote another video, a playlist, or your subscribe button.

Cards

Add clickable elements during the video to guide viewers to related content.

Step 6: Set Visibility Wisely

  • Choose Private or Unlisted before going public.
  • Use the Schedule feature to pick a go-live date and time.

Step 7: Pin a Comment (After It’s Live)

After publishing:

  • Comment with a link to another video.
  • Pin that comment to the top to keep viewers engaged.

✅ Final Thoughts

Every little optimization—from file names to end screens—sends the right signals to YouTube’s algorithm. Follow these steps and you’ll set your videos up for more views, better rankings, and increased engagement.
